India is a country where the whole year is marked by events and festivals in various cultures and religions. One of the main festivals celebrated in the country is that of Raksha Bandhan. This auspicious festival is celebrated on the full moon day or purnima of the month of Shravan in the Hindu calendar. It marks the love and devotion of a brother towards his sister. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi or a sacred thread on the wrists of their brothers, praying for their long life and well being.
In return, the brothers bestow their sisters with gifts and promise to protect them and take care of them for entire life. Raksha Bandhan also marks the beginning of the festive season in the Hindu calendar and the festive season culminates with Diwali and Bhai Dooj, which falls in the month of October or November.
