India is the land of festivals and celebrations. One of the most prominent festivals of the Hindu religion is Krishna Janmashtami, which marks the auspicious occasion of the birth of Lord Krishna. The festival falls on the eighth day or Ashtami Tithi of the Shravana Krishna Paksha of the Hindu calendar. It generally corresponds with the month of August or September of the English calendar. The festival is marked by grand celebrations in the temples of North India, particularly in Mathura and Vrindavan, the land where Lord Krishna was born and spent his childhood days. People fast throughout the day and stay awake till midnight.
They place the idol of Lord Krishna on a swing and sing devotional songs or bhajans till midnight. It is so because Lord Krishna was believed to be born at this point of time. In Maharashtra, the festival is celebrated in a fun filled version called Dahi handi. An earthen pot filled with curd and buttermilk is hung from a great height. People form a human pyramid and the person on the top, tries to break the pot, spilling its contents all over the people gathered below. Thousands of people throng the streets of Mumbai to witness this grand event.
