Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Cavithi or Ganesa Caturthi. It is a grand Hindu festival celebrated to honor Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed God. Chaturthi ideally means fourth state or fourth day. Hence celebrations are held on the fourth day of Shukla Chaturthi (first fortnight) that falls in the month of Bhaadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. This usually coincides with the months of August or September as per Gregorian calendar.
The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi lasts for about 10 days and ends on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the fortnight). While the festival is celebrated in almost every home and office, the celebration is massive and pandals celebrating Lord Ganesha come up all over the country. This festival is grand especially in Maharashtra and Telangana. The dhol and tasha used during the celebrations in Maharashtra is a different experience altogether. States such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh also celebrate this grand festival.
