Ganesh Chaturthi 2018 – Date, Puja Shubh Muhurat Timing

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular festivals in India and it was primarily celebrated in the state of Maharashtra but slowly, its popularity has spread all over the country. Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, the festval marks the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, the God of wisdom, prosperity and abundance. The birth of Lord Ganesha falls in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, which corresponds with August or September of the English calendar.

The festival is celebrated as Ganeshotsav, during which the idol of Ganapati is brough home and worshipped for a period of 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. On this day, Ganapati Visarjan takes place, which means that the idol is taken in a ceremonial procession out of the home of the devotees and then immersed in a water body, an ocean or a river. The Puja performed during the Ganeshotsav should be done during the midday or Madhyahna Kala, the time when Lord Ganesha was born. Also, the sighting of the moon is prohibited on the festival of Ganesha Chaturthui as it leads to Mithya Dosham. The moon sighting has to be avoided for two consecutive days, when the Chaturthi Tithi is prevailing.
