Belgaum’s history dates back to 225 BC. This is when Jakkadeva decided to build a bud fort in this area. The remains of the fort are seen even today. Belgaum was initially named ‘Velugrama’ meaning ‘Village of Bamboos’. It was later changed to Belagugrama, then Belugav and eventually Belgaum or Belagavi (Bel meaning Bamboo and gaon meaning village). Belgaum was initially ruled by the Satavahanas then the Chanakyas and then the Rashtrakutas. It was later ruled by the Kadambas and by the Rattas around the 12th century. This is when Belgaum attained preeminence. The most prominent ruler of Belgaum was Bijapur ruler Asad Khan. He ruled this settlement for almost 38 years. He was also responsible for the construction of the Fort and the Safa Maskid in Belgaum. Eventually the Marathas captured Belgaum and ruled it from 1754 to 1818. In 1818 the British captured Belgaum and decided to make it their district headquarters.
