The Ajanta – Elora caves are one of India’s most artistic treasures of all time. These caves are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are one of the finest examples of ancient Indian murals and sculptures that are housed within 28 caves that was a Buddhist monastery between the second and seventh century BC. It is believed that the work on these caves begun back in 400 AD when the monks carved out temples to offer prayers.

These carvings depict some of the best artistic work that the craftsmen in those days possessed. Although these carvings and painting are over fourteen centuries old, they are still beautiful and complex.

The Ajanta – Elora caves are situated about 100 kms from Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The history of these caves can be traced back to the 2nd century and these caves have sculptures and carvings that range from the 2nd century to the 6th century.

Some of these carvings that belong to the 5th and 6th century belong to the Gupta reign and it is prominent in the carvings.

The 28 caves here are divided into various areas that include “Chaitya-Grihas” (stupa halls) and “Viharas” (dwelling halls). Most of the carvings and paintings here portray the teachings of Lord Buddha. The cave was discovered in the 19th century by the British soldiers.

Best Time To Visit

The Ajanta-Elora caves are in Maharashtra which is known for humid climates. Try to avoid visiting the caves during summers which is between March to June since it gets very hot and humid and walking through the caves becomes tough. The best time to visit the caves is during the monsoon or winter. The monsoon is between June to September and Winters between November to February.
